Some of the most soulful work we've ever heard from South African tenorist Basil Mannenberg Coetzee – served up here on an album that's split with fellow saxophonist Barney Rachabane! Side one features Coetzee stretching out on a really long track – a side-long reading of the classic "Shrimp Boats", but taken into very different territory as a longform solo vehicle – with work from a group that also features Stompie Manana on tenor and Lionel Pillay on both keyboards and piano – players who also get plenty of room for solo space, next to the bass of Charles Johnstone and drums of Rod Clark. Side two has a different flavor – still with keyboards and piano from Pillay, but next to alto work from Barney Rachabane, a player who's almost got some Hank Crawford elements in his sound – working alongside Duku Makasi on tenor, Sipho Gumede on bass, and Gilbert Mathews on drums. Titles include a remake of the South African jazz classic "Yakal Inkomo" – plus "Slow Blues For Orial" and the Weather Report tune "Birdland".
