Backed by Monophonics, Kirkland delivers a rich, horn-driven collection that seamlessly blends upbeat soul with heartfelt ballads, reaffirming his place as one of the genre's enduring voices.The album opens with the energetic "Ready Or Not," where Kirkland confidently declares, "Baby, I am ready," setting the tone for a triumphant comeback. Producer Kelly Finnigan channels the lush sophistication of Philly soul on "Where Did We Go Wrong," layering horns, flute, French horn, and sitar beneath Kirkland's reflection on love in turmoil. Finnigan also arranges the romantic "Leading Lady," while joining Kirkland on background vocals for the tender "Remembering Our Love."The midtempo title track "The Business" turns it's attention to social issues, pairing flowing strings with lyrics addressing systemic injustice and police oppression. In contrast, "Joyriding" captures the carefree spirit of summer with an uplifting groove that ranks among the album's highlights.Well-received single "Glowin'," closes the album.
