Three CD set containing four-hours of US folk-rock from the 1960s. The most thorough compilation that has ever been assembled of a major movement that transformed popular music, including hits, rarities, and deep cuts from a huge spectrum of artists. Featuring rare tracks by Johnny Winter, David Blue and Jesse Lee Kincaid make their CD debut; includes seldom-reissued original 45 versions of songs by Phil Ochs and Tom Rush. Plus early and little known covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and Clarence White and landmark hits by The Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, the Youngbloods, Judy Collins, Dion, Linda Ronstadt, the Lovin' Spoonful and others. Including overlooked obscure tracks by notables like Dan Hicks, John Stewart, Bob Lind, the Mamas & the Papas, Melanie, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Beau Brummels and obscure early outings by stars on the rise like Cass Elliot with the Mugwumps, Linda Ronstadt with the Stone Poneys, Grace Slick with the Great Society, and Janis Joplin with Big Brother & the Holding Company. Cult folk-rockers include Tim Buckley, Gene Clark, Steve Young, and Fred Neil alongside top-tier folk-rock by near-unknowns like the Blue Things, Lamb, Blackburn & Snow and Stone Country. Selected and sequenced to sonically illustrate the astonishing growth of folk-rock from 1965 to 1970, from the first hits by the Byrds and Bob Dylan through the integration of psychedelia by the likes of Jefferson Airplane and Love; the launch of the singer- songwriter genre by artists such as Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, P.F. Sloan, and Bob Lind; early country-rock by Poco, the Dillards, the Grateful Dead, and Mike Nesmith; and even some teen garage folk-rock rock and folk-rock novelty sides along the way.
